Weekly RPG Releases: March 24th, 2008

For everyone who owns a PSP this is a great week for RPGs. Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core comes out in North America this week. This game has been getting good reviews and from everything I have seen this looks like it will be a great game. Opoona also comes out this week and has had poor reviews for the most part. For PAL territories there are three releases this week including Dungeon Explorer, Naruto: Clash of Ninja Revolution and Riviera. These game received mixed reviews for the most part, but I did enjoy Riviera quite a bit. This game was released originally on the GameBoy Advance and if you have not had a chance to play it now is a great time to check it out. View complete list of upcoming RPG releases.

There are not a lot of releases this week for RPG fans. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates and Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer will be released for European markets. Both games were released recently in North America with Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates getting good reviews and Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer getting mixed reviews. There are a couple releases for North America next week with Opoona for the Wii and a game I have been looking forward to Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core for the PSP. This is a good week for RPG releases. The two North American releases are both games I have been looking forward to getting. Wild ARMs: Crossfire and the new Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates will be out on Wednesday. There are four European releases this week including Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn for the Wii. This game is really good and anyone who enjoys strategy games should pick this one up. Odin Sphere is a game that was released in North America last year and got good reviews. The gameplay is action oriented and the game has beautiful 2D sprites. View complete list of upcoming RPG releases.

This is a pretty slow week for releases with only one release for the Nintendo DS. I have not had a chance to play Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer myself nor have I read many reviews. The only review MetaCritic has posted is from Nintendo Power which gave the game a 65 out of 100. They said that there is a solid adventure to be had if the player can look beyond the games flaws. I think I am going to wait for more reviews before I pick the game up. There are a few more RPGs being released next week though including Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates for the DS and Wild Arms: Crossfire for the PSP which both look like good games if you are wanting to get a new RPG.

There are no RPG releases this week for North America although Shin Megami Tensia: Persona 3 and Lost Odyssey will be available later in the week in PAL territories. Persona 3 is definitely a game that any fan of RPGs with a PS2 should pick up. The story is great and and it was by far one of the best RPGs released last year in the states in my opinion. The story is very dark and disturbing, the battle system is great with enough depth to keep it interesting for the entire game and the characters really come together to form a compelling story. I am playing through Lost Odyssey right now and so far it seems like a pretty good game. It feels far more traditional than Persona 3 but the graphics are pretty good and the story is interesting.

There are not a lot of releases this week for RPGs but there are still releases for 3 systems. For the DS and PSP Dungeon Explorer: Warrior of the Ancient Arts is finally being released. The games are different for each system even though they share the same name. There have not been many reviews for the game yet, but The Official PlayStation Magazine gave the PSP version a score of 50 out of 100. Dragon Quest Swords is also being released this week and although it is considered an action/adventure game I am sure people who like the Dragon Quest RPG games will be checking this one out. This game has been getting average scores as well with a MetaCritic score of only 66. It looks like next week will even have less releases, but this is normal for this time of year and it will be picking up in March.

The big game to be released this week is Lost Oyssey for the Xbox 360. The game has been getting above average reviews by most publications. Most reviews state the the story is very interesting and complex, the graphics are beautiful but the battle system is very traditional and is in need of an update. MetaCritic already has quite a few reviews if you want to read more.

There is only one RPG release this week. Culdcept Saga will be out on the 5th and the game seems like it will be a lot of fun. The demo has been available on Xbox Live for a few weeks now and before buying the game you may want to download it and see if you like the style of play. The game has been called a mix between Monopoly and Magic the Gathering. View the full post to watch some new gameplay and trailer videos.
